DIY Lip Balm for Gifts

20131216-074138.jpg Andrea and I are the small group leaders for the 11th and 12th grade girls. We wanted to give them a little something for Christmas. I saw this idea on Pinterest and I had bought these containers a while back, and I thought “Bam-Yow! This will be perfect!” It is soooo easy!

Supplies: Bees Wax, 1Tbl. (found in the candle section of craft store)
Coconut Oil, 2 Tbl (found in your grocery store near the other oils)
Flavoring, a drop or two (such as peppermint or almond or vanilla)
(It is not recommended to use essential oils, due to the fact that they are not meant to be ingested. Good to know! Don’t need sweet girls getting sick over our lip balms.)
A Sliver of Lipstick (for a bit of color if you want. I think it makes it pretty.)
Small Containers.(which small round containers can be found in the jewelry dept. of the craft store. Or these metal slide containers can be ordered here.

20131216-075231.jpgFirst we attacked the block of bees wax. Guess what? That baby was tough! We tried cutting it with a big butcher knife…no go. Then tried the old grater….no go.

20131216-075350.jpgAhhh…the peeler! All you need is a few tablespoons of grated bees wax.

20131216-075518.jpgMelt the coconut oil, (which actually has the consistency of Crisco, so don’t let the word “oil” throw you off), and the bees wax in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring until melted.

20131216-080016.jpgAdd the sliver of lipstick to the melted wax. Stir well.

20131216-080055.jpgPour into prepared containers. (I wiped mine with rubbing alcohol to make them nice and clean.)

20131216-080211.jpgWe decorated the tops of the containers with glitter, paint and glitter tape. Wrapped them up in a cute little bag and Voila’!

20131216-080340.jpgOn the back of the container we glued this verse to remind the girls of how our mouths can used to glorify God.

20131216-081236.jpgAfter the fact notes….This recipe made 4 containers. We decided to add some honey to the mixture thinking it might give it some healing properties. (Who do we think we are? It sounded good.) Also, because I didn’t know if I had enough coconut oil, we replaced one of the tablespoons of coconut oil with Vaseline.
I had so much fun hanging out with Andrea!
